The School of Lost Borders is committed to creating opportunities for people from all walks of life to express their individual natures within old and modern ceremonial practices. Solitude and silence in wild nature, the commitment to community, honoring of personal intent, and the acknowledgement and responsibility to bring forth one's gifts, are the foundation of our ceremonies and teachings.

The School was founded in 1981 by Steven Foster and Meredith Little and has made its home in the small desert town of Big Pine for over two decades. This "Land of Little Rain" continues to sustain the heart of our work even as we travel throughout the U.S. and Europe offering vision fast and trainings.

Current courses include month-long and two-week trainings, week-long field seminars, council-story telling intensives, the practice of living and dying seminars, vision fasts, youth fast and trainings for adults, German-speaking vision fasts, and courses taught by visiting experts in the field.

Faculty: Angelo LaZenka, Emerald North, Petsy Perluss, PhD, Virginia "Gigi" Coyle, Winslow Phelps, Silvia Talavera, Meredith Little, Scott Eberle, MD, John Davis, PhD, Jeffrey Duvall, Mary McHenry, Jack West, Ruth Wharton, Chris Kaiser, Roger Milliken, Nancy Jane, Haiko Nitschke, and Larry Hobbes. TREE OF LIFE VISION QUESTS
Phil Baum
30638 Rolling Hills Drive
Valley Center, California 92082
lovetree@nethere.com

I lead traditional shamanic and Tibetan Buddhist-flavored vision quests in the high and low desert country of southern California which include, but are not limited to, internal and external Qigong practices, pranayama breath work, and Orisha-based Afro-Cuban and Afro-Haitian drumming evocations.

In 1998, I was trained by Steven Foster, Ph.D and Meredith Little of Lost Borders in traditional vision quest practices which complemented my study and practice of various and multiple indigenous, spiritually based traditions originating in Africa, Asia, South and North America and ancient Europe which I’ve been working with, in a variety of ways, since 1968.

Aside from my California state-issued college level credentials in counseling and teaching (Psychology, Counseling and high school English) all of which I’ve taught and practiced and since retired from, I’m a long-term student of advanced standing in various Buddhist disciplines and practices, in particular Tibetan Buddhism.

I’ve also taught hatha yoga and I currently teach basic, simple Qigong practices and meditation techniques derived, in part, from my work with Thich Nhat Hanh and other senior Buddhist teachers. My formal training in shamanic studies and practices goes back over twenty years and involves retreats with lineage shamans, chanters and road men from both North and South America.

By my own reckoning, I’ve participated in, sometimes led quests, of one sort or another, at least seventy-five times so I know the territory. I’m also an active grandpa, organic farmer and student of the arts - especially ceramics - who has, over the years, worked with folks from every walk of life.

Focusing on how to listen to Creator speaking to us, we incorporate the use of animals as messengers from Great Spirit. We believe that Creator created all therefore there is spirit in all and that Creator is speaking to us always, but we often do not know how to listen and interpret what Great Spirit is telling us. We offer small groups so we can attend to each person's needs through Heart Focus Training, Women's Sacred Circles, Vision Quests, Switzerland Hiking Tours, Sierra Nevada Hiking Tours, Backpack Tours, Living in Harmony Training, and Shamanic Training.

Our vision quest is a spiritual journey, a window for transformation – a chance to reclaim and bring forth the power and joy of your authentic self.

VISION ARROW

Vision Arrow: Treasure Hunts for the Soul

Vision Arrow, founded in 1996, combines adventure travel, personal transformation, and pilgrimage to sacred sites. Centered in rural Thompson, Pennsylvania, we offer workshops and vision quests around the world, including the Utah Canyonlands, Celtic Wales, the Sahara Desert, and the woodlands of northeastern Pennsylvania.

People who come to Vision Arrow are seekers. They’ve done a lot of inner work, but still they search for that missing Something Else that will make them feel fully alive and true to themselves in the way they know they were meant to be. Here’s what you will discover when you take a Vision Arrow program:

* Within you is a force that calls you forth and another force that holds you back, and you make the choice many times a day to follow one or the other.
* Your life is a great heroic journey. Everything that happens to you is part of the adventure.
* Many different inner personalities and conflicting voices influence the decisions you make. All are worthy of respect and exploration. Coming to know them, you transform what you don’t need and nourish the self you long to be.
* Paying attention to what fascinates you in nature, you gain insight about your true self.
* The vision you seek is not one final answer that will solve all your problems, but a dynamic, authentic way of life you choose to live in every moment.
* You are the only authority you need.

Vision Arrow programs are different from other wilderness rites of passage trips, quests, and personal growth workshops in that we do not perceive you as lacking something that we can somehow supply. We have no system or dogma that you must follow. We do not claim to be able to heal you. We know the treasure is within you and we show how to use the tools you already have, not just to find that beautiful, joyful self but to use it in every aspect of your life.

Women-only and mixed-gender Backcountry Quests

We offer these backpacking quests as contemporary re-enactments of cross-cultural vision quests. The 7-day journey includes three days and nights of solitude with an optional fast. Extensive preparation is offered in the months preceding the quest. We work with specific sites in Eastern Washington.

Restoration of Land and Soul Journeys

Restoration Trips are 5-day gentle backpacks into a basalt-rimmed, sagebrush-scented, flower-filled canyon to help pull invasive weeds, remove old fire-rings, restore overused campsites, and respond to other needs the canyon might have. We also work with the subtleties of ceremony, movement, shamanic journeys, laughter, tears and song to release the deeper levels of impact that we humans unknowingly leave on the land.

As we work with the physical land, our inner landscapes receive the benefit also. Old stories tied to the smoldering fire pits inside are released; invasive, nonnative “weeds” of our inner culture are respectfully removed; and our life-song is set free again. Includes a 24-hour solo.
